going.com in CMH.

May 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

In NY and other big cities, there are an abundance of websites that exist to publicize and organize events in a fairly egalitarian manner. I know several people who like the idea of meetup.com, but I never got into it (Columbus area witches and Pagans are totally into it).

One site that caught on pretty well that I dug was going.com. They did quite a bit more than act as a virtual bulletin board; for instance, they were pretty integral in the success of last summer’s Pool Parties, a series of completely awesome and completely free shows at the McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn. They’ve also done a great job of promoting events that my friends and other upstanding cultural contributors have produced (via exclusive going.com discounted/non-existent cover charges and the like). I received an email from the folks at going.com the other day with news that they had expanded and now support 30 cities, including Honolulu, Austin, Atlanta and Columbus!

Yay!

Leah and Lauren take over likemind Columbus.

May 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Likemind is a monthly meet-up for folks who are interested in grabbing a cup of coffee before work and having a good chat. This fun phenomenon was started by Noah Brier and Piers Fawkes, two sharp gents in NY who work, for all intents and purposes, in the creative industry (check their respective sites for loads of interesting information and commentary). The event has been sponsored by companies such as Anomaly and Random House (the latter of which also donated copies of Rob Walker’s Buying In to May likemind attendees), and is now held in dozens of cities across the world (on every continent!)

Taylor asked me, “so how can you tell if the people who come are really likeminded?” Good question. I think that anyone willing to get up an hour early one Friday a month to meet new people and have engaging conversation is certainly likeminded enough for me.

Ms. Leah McDougald and I will be assuming the position of hostesses of the Columbus likemind starting this June. We hope you can make it out, and look forward to saying hi.

Details as follows:

where: Cup O’ Joe -Short North
600 N. High Street
Columbus, Ohio

when: friday, june 20 @ 8am

If you’re up for it, stay tuned here, or drop me a line and I’ll make sure you are in the know.

my modeling career….

May 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

never really took off.  however, i did used to work for a company called Ameribag (for about 2 months), where i modeled some of their product and was subsequently put in their catalog.  while browsing their new site, i came to find this piece of surprise.

this was the #2 internet magic moment of may 1, 2008, the first being an email from joel kashuba (referenced in my post about the idsa mideast conference) saying that he googled himself (for totally un-vain reasons) and found the reference in my site, and then realized that we are both bff with ashton peters.

so today, i thank the internet for keeping alive old pictures (and memories of short employment stints past) and rekindling friendships in new ways.
