my modeling career….

never really took off.  however, i did used to work for a company called Ameribag (for about 2 months), where i modeled some of their product and was subsequently put in their catalog.  while browsing their new site, i came to find this piece of surprise.

this was the #2 internet magic moment of may 1, 2008, the first being an email from joel kashuba (referenced in my post about the idsa mideast conference) saying that he googled himself (for totally un-vain reasons) and found the reference in my site, and then realized that we are both bff with ashton peters.

so today, i thank the internet for keeping alive old pictures (and memories of short employment stints past) and rekindling friendships in new ways.

nuff said.

2 weekends straight of idsa fun: a quick recap.

4/4 – 4/6

idsa northeast district conference

philadelphia, pa

flying plants.

After spending six months and hundreds of hours planning, we kicked out this conference with record attendance numbers and the sweetest (and best looking) speaker roster ever.

Things kicked off on Friday night with a righteous party at Dane Decor, then many after parties at locations I can’t recall. I do, however, recall a conversation with undisclosed parties on the topic of wiener piercings and airport metal detectors.

Saturday was the jam. The speakers were awesome, the weather was surprisingly awesome, and I heard that the student merit awards were awesome, but they happened at my optimal naptime.

Saturday night ended up being a bit of an adventure, and I learned the hard way that getting a cab home (or to the Sheraton) at 3am in Philly is no bueno. Then a friend of Jesse’s (who will remain nameless) uprooted a plant Super Mario-style and threw it from the 4th floor of the Sheraton to the ground floor where Aaron Penn and I were standing. Thankfully it fell directly between the two of us (see evidence above).

By Sunday I really needed a nap, but held it out through the final stretch, and saw some interesting portfolios and speakers. Nike’s Max Burton was a big hit with everyone from the night before (apparently he picked up a pretty hefty tab), and also gave a nice sneak peek at some Nike+ goods that make me wish I were a jogger.

4/11 – 4/13

idsa mideast district conference

columbus, oh

My first non-coastal regional IDSA experience ruled. Lextant threw a killer party for the opening reception, where we hosted a mini Pecha Kucha, ate grilled cheese sandwiches and gave tours of our space. IDSA’s communication guru Tim Adkins was there in full effect (entourage included), as was the organization’s new Executive Director and my nominee for Coolest Man Alive, Frank Tyneski.

On Saturday I slept in a little (for the first time in 2 weeks) and made it just in time to get blown away by Chris Rockwell’s articulate presentation on insight translation and his introduction to a design research workshop, which engaged designers by using research findings on design language to determine key style elements and their appropriate application on an object (in this case, a cell phone).

This guy from P&G (can’t remember his name – look it up, lazies!) gave a righteous talk on story-telling and how to mimic architecture from stories to develop experiences and communicate ideas. I hope he speaks at nationals.

Also worth mentioning was Joel Kashuba’s Reverend Shane McCray um, engagement (?) where he demonstrated the Power of Design through enthusiastic gestures and the wearing of a mullet wig. He’s also an ex-SCADdite. Booyah, RISD.

shameless plug.

the idsa northeast district conference is almost sold out. this is really unheard of.

typically only 50% of participants register in advance – and we are almost at 100% capacity with pre-registration.

this is probably a result of the righteous lineup we have, including multiple appearances by Marty Gage, lextant’s resident badass (i mean, besides me).

it is going to be awesome. philly, watch out.

jenni light = radness.

jen light that’s right.

easter: rewind.

still funny.

Ohioisms, Part I: The Wash & Tan.

There are many things I have noticed since moving to Columbus that have caught my attention – radical college sports fanaticism, water towers, bad drivers – but perhaps the most bizarre and ridiculous (to me, a definite non-midwesterner) is the “Wash & Tan.”

So at first I’m thinking… ok, well if you’re washing your clothes, maybe you can dye them also – relating the “tan” part of the equation to some kind of weird midwestern adaptation of leather tanning but for regular clothes in a public facility.  Wrong, oh wrong I was.

For those of you not privy, a “Wash & Tan” is a place where you can wash your clothes, while tanning yourself.  Ok, I understand that this is extremely convenient, and almost necessary due to the complete lack of sunshine in this U-shaped state – but really?  I get grossed out enough by soap sud accumulation in those industrial washers.  I can’t even imagine the kind of film and nastiness that happens in said tanning beds.

Furthermore, I have never heard anyone even mention the “Wash & Tan” in conversation (or the media, or ever) which leads me to believe that -

a. people go and don’t talk about it, because it’s embarrassing (completely understood).

b. people have washing machines at home, and therefore are also really pale?

c. there is an entire demographic that i am completely foreign to, and they are the ones washing and tanning.

d. wtf?

While affirming that a “Wash & Tan” is precisely that, I came across some reviews of Ohio-area Wash & Tans.  I’d say those are self-explanatory.

Further investigation will hopefully yield geographic parameters for these establishments.  Unfortunately, I don’t know if I will ever find myself indulging in the simultaneous sudsing of my clothes and charring of my flesh.  But if you wanna go please do report back (and if you already do, we have quite a bit of catching up in store).

Happy St. Patrick’s day.
